When you send a private message to someone, it takes time for the receiver of the message to see the alert, open the message and read it. 

While you are waiting for the receiver of your Private Message to read it, it will continue to show in your outbox. Once the receiving party reads the message it will automatically move to your "Sent" folder, indicating to you that the message you sent was opened and viewed.
